The traditional lifestyle of the Canadian Inuit makes an interesting cultural study. Examine how a culture co-exists with the harsh elements of the Arctic environment, instead of against it. The innovative inventions and survival techniques of the Inuit instill admiration for such a society. The unit was developed for grades 2 and 3. Grade 4 can use all of the unit as well by including more of the reading information sheets.
Each topic is introduced with an information sheet. This sheet can be:
1) read to the class by the teacher
2) used only as a teacher resource
3) read by the students as an oral group activity
4) read independently by the more advanced students. Throughout the unit, activities have been created to serve the various learning styles found in each classroom.
The quotations of the Coppermine elders were collected under a Canada Council Explorations Programme project and are authentic. The author spent eleven years in Canada's Central Arctic Kitikmeot region as a teacher and writer and has attempted to convey the most accurate cultural information available. You may notice spelling differences. At times English spellings are used (e.g. igloo); other times the lnuktitut is used (e.g. iglu). Either is correct. Spelling differences have also occurred as an attempt to standardize the lnuktitut language continues, so some familiar words (komatik - a sled) now look quite different (qamutik).
