I teach grade 7 at a school in Trenton, Ontario. This year I had the challenge of engaging my wide range of students (high academic achievers to students who struggle to read) in history while learning the new history curriculum myself. I was very thankful for getting my hands on the High Interest/Low Vocabulary History Resources. They covered all aspects of the new curriculum (especially inquiry based teaching) while engaging students with interesting, yet, relatively easy reads. Students were able to work in groups, partners or individually with these resources with high engagement and high interest. Every student was involved in the reading since the text is basic enough that all students, no matter their entry level can participate. Each lesson is followed up with an inquiry that can be down in the computer lab or with the use of library books. My students enjoyed this piece because it is a follow up activity, building upon what was learned the previous day. It also allows students to participate and work based on their own unique needs and levels. Some students have the opportunity to go above and beyond, where the struggling students can answer the questions more simply. I loved these High Interest/Low Vocabulary resources and they were a life saver this year as I also learned along with the students to our new history curriculum!
